Toimprovetheantibacterialperformanceofpoly(ethylene-co-acrylicacid)(PEAA)copolymer,aliphatic quaternaryammoniumsalts(QASs)wasgraftedintoPEAAcopolymersviaaSteglichesteri?cationreac-tionusingN,N0-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide(DCC)asadehydratingagent.Thepolymersweresynthesized usingdodecyldimethylhydroxyethylammoniumchloride(DDHAC),whichwaspreparedbyquaterniza-tionofdimethylethanolamine(DMEA)with1-chlorododecane.Thesepolymerseffectivelyinhibitedthe growthofmicroorganismsduetotheirhydrophobicchains,whichwereboundtoPEAAcopolymers.The obtainedPEAA-g-DDHAC(PGD)wasinvestigatedbyattenuatedtotalre?ectance-Fouriertransform infraredspectroscopy(ATR-FTIR),protonnuclearmagneticresonance( 1 HNMR),thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),differentialscanningcalorimetry(DSC),andantibacterialtests.Theresultsshowedthat theantibacterialeffectsofPGDsweresigni?cantlyimprovedbyalkylgrafting,andthisimprovement dependedonreactiontemperature.Thehighestantibacterialactivitywasobservedforpolymerssynthe-sizedat135CagainstGram-positiveStaphylococcusaureusandGram-negativeEscherichiacoli.Their decompositionratewasacceleratedasthetemperatureincreasedabove165Cbecauseofthethermal decompositionofDDHAC.
